Frequently Asked Questions

How would an independent educational consultant benefit me if I receive guidance from my school?

Each school counselor may be responsible for 400 or more students each year. Scheduling and enrollment demands may limit the amount of time they have to discuss your college options. College admission has become an involved and competitive process. You may want more individually focused time than your school counselor can provide. In addition, meetings can be scheduled to fit your and your parents schedules. We routinely schedule meetings in the afternoon and evening after school , on school holidays and on the weekends.  At College Consultants of South Carolina, our only focus is college counseling. Our goal is to complement the services you receive from your school so that you can find the schools that best fit for you and have the time that you need to use an expert at every step in the process.

Is this service only for high-achieving students who desire the most competitive colleges?

We work with students who have a wide range of test scores, GPAs and extracurricular involvement. We have experience assisting students in choosing colleges at all levels of competitiveness. Our goal is to help you find the colleges that fit for your needs and goals.

Are students seen individually or in groups?

Our college planning sessions are intended for individual students and their families. We believe that each student should have our undivided attention when we meet.  Throughout the year we also schedule a number of college planning workshops for small groups of students and parents who may want  information or skill building without committing to individual working sessions.

With all the information available to students today, can’t we just do this ourselves?

Absolutely. Keep in mind that time becomes very limited and the learning curve is very steep. An educational consultant can reduce the stress families and students experience and make the college selection and application process easier to manage.

When should a student start the college planning process?

This process can start when you begin high school. The competitive nature of college admissions rewards those who begin planning early. Your courses and academic record starting in the ninth grade affect your college options as a senior. Start thinking about colleges as a freshman and become more focused as you move through your sophomore and junior years.  The earlier you are able to start working with us, the greater your success.

Do you try to influence decisions of college admissions staff?

No. That is both unprofessional as well as unethical. Our contact is with you and your family.

Do you complete financial aid applications?

We are happy to assist our clients in working with their FAFSA and if required, the CSS profile. While this is automatically included in all long-term service packages,  we can assist other clients on an hourly fee basis.

What can you do to help me qualify for South Carolina’s Lottery Assistance Scholarships?

The HOPE, LIFE and Palmetto Fellows Scholarships are tied to certain GPAs and/or college admission test scores. Through our meetings, you will receive regular feedback on where you stand and what academic standard you need to either maintain or attain scholarship eligibility. We will use the sophomore and junior PSAT and sophomore PLAN scores as feedback to develop strategies for the SAT and/or ACT.

Our proprietary GPA Goal Setter© can be used to help you set GPA goals and monitor your progress toward them.  It is automatically included in all long-term service packages and is available to others through this website for a nominal yearly fee.   See our Products page for more information on tis powerful tool.

I am home schooled. How would your services benefit me?

To begin with, we can ensure that your cirriculum meets or exceeds college admission requirements. As with all our clients,  we will assist you in setting and attaining your college admission goals while providing important support and professional guidance as you move toward at every step along the way.
